TOTTENHAM HOTSPUR AND FC BASEL
IN SRI LANKA COMMUNITY PROJECT
From the 17th to the 20th of May, the first module of
the Scort-Project Sri Lanka
took
place in Mannar, a post-civil war region in the
Northwest of Sri Lanka.
In cooperation with the partner club FC Basel
(Switzerland), the
community department
of
Tottenham Hotspur FC as well as the FIFA, Scort realises
a social football
initiative for young Sri Lankan women and men.
During four modules within one year Willy Schmid, FC
Basel, as well as Joe Lyons
and Karen Hills from the Tottenham Hotspur Foundation,
and during the first module
also the FIFA instructor Fritz Schmid,
educate 25 young
women and men with
different ethnic backgrounds as children’s and
grassroots football coaches.
In cooperation with local partners, Scort and the
coaches use football as a tool
for health promotion, integration, conveying core values
and development.
The young people will be educated as multipliers and
will act as role model for
younger ones in the future. During the year and with
support of the professional
trainers they are supposed to build up their own
football training groups.
The year-long social initiative starts subsequent to the
FIFA Grassroots Program in Colombo and is supported by
the FIFA, the Football Federation of Sri Lanka (FFSL),
the Swiss company Holcim Ltd. as well as other partners.
